Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro 7-Day Trek – Summit Africa’s Highest Peak

The Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro 7-Day Trek is one of the most scenic and rewarding ways to summit Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest mountain at 5,895 meters (19,341 ft). Starting on the western slopes, the Lemosho Route is renowned for its lush rainforest, wildflowers, remote landscapes, and incredible panoramic views.

This 7-day itinerary is designed for trekkers who want a balance between adequate acclimatization and a shorter schedule without compromising safety or the summit experience. Over the course of the trek, climbers pass through montane forests, heather and moorland zones, alpine desert, and the glaciers of the summit zone. Each day brings unique landscapes, spectacular views, and wildlife encounters.

With experienced guides, support staff, porters, and full logistics provided, trekkers enjoy a safe, comfortable, and unforgettable journey to the “Roof of Africa,” culminating in a sunrise summit at Uhuru Peak.

Day 1 :

Arrival in Moshi or Arusha / Transfer to Londorossi Gate

Arrive in Moshi or Arusha, where you meet your guides and receive a briefing about the trek. Transfer to Londorossi Gate, the starting point of the Lemosho Route. Trek through the lush rainforest to Big Tree Camp, where you enjoy dinner and overnight accommodation amid dense forest and wildlife sounds.

Day 2 :

Big Tree Camp to Shira 1 Camp (3,500 m)

After breakfast, begin the trek through dense rainforest, gradually ascending to the Shira Plateau. Witness wildflowers and spectacular vistas as the landscape shifts from forest to heather and moorlands. Overnight at Shira 1 Camp with stunning plateau views.

Day 3 :

Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp (3,850 m)

Trek across the Shira Plateau, a scenic area dotted with volcanic rock formations. Pass by ancient lava flows and enjoy panoramic views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Arrive at Shira 2 Camp, where you can rest and acclimatize.

Day 4 :

Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp (3,950 m)

Descend slightly from Shira Plateau and trek through the moist moorland and small valleys, crossing streams and observing rare flora. Ascend to the Barranco Valley, an area famous for its dramatic cliffs and scenic beauty. Overnight at Barranco Camp.

Day 5 :

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp (4,000 m)

Climb the famous Barranco Wall, a challenging but safe rock scramble offering incredible views of the mountain. Continue through alpine desert and high-altitude moorlands to Karanga Camp, a peaceful base for acclimatization before the summit push.

Day 6 :

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,600 m)

Trek through the rocky alpine desert, passing barren highland valleys and reaching Barafu Camp, the final camp before the summit. Afternoon is for rest, hydration, and preparation for the summit attempt. Early dinner and early sleep is essential.

Day 7 :

Summit Day – Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) and descend to Mweka Camp (3,100 m)

A pre-dawn start begins the summit push through the alpine desert to Stella Point on the crater rim. Continue across the rim to reach Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point, at sunrise. Enjoy breathtaking views before descending via Mweka Route to Mweka Camp, where you have dinner and overnight accommodation.

Day 08 :

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate / Departure

Complete the final descent through rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you receive your summit certificates. Transfer back to Moshi or Arusha for rest, celebration, and onward travel.
