9 Days Rwenzori Trekking Central Circuit Trail Route

The trek begins at Nyakalengija Trailhead with registration, a briefing, and meeting your licensed guide and support team. The trail climbs gently through montane rainforest, crossing streams and wooden bridges. Wildlife spotting opportunities include colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and various forest birds. The day ends at Nyabitaba Hut for dinner and an overnight stay.

After breakfast, the trail ascends steadily through rainforest and bamboo zones, gradually opening to scenic viewpoints overlooking valleys and peaks. Hikers may spot unique plants and wildlife along the way. John Matte Hut serves as the first acclimatization point, offering a comfortable overnight.

The trek climbs into heather and moorland zones, passing streams, waterfalls, and giant lobelias. Panoramic mountain views become more dramatic, and the terrain grows rocky as elevation increases. Overnight is at Bujuku Hut, located near Bujuku Valley, a key base for higher altitude trekking.

This is a challenging ascent through alpine moorlands and rocky ridges, approaching Kitandara Hut, the high-altitude camp. Along the way, trekkers enjoy views of glaciers, snowfields, and sweeping alpine landscapes. Overnight at Kitandara Hut allows for proper acclimatization in preparation for the summit attempt.

An early pre-dawn start begins the summit push to Margherita Peak (5,109 m/16,762 ft). Climbers traverse rocky ridges, scree slopes, and glaciated terrain under the guidance of experienced mountain leaders. Upon reaching the summit, trekkers are rewarded with panoramic views of the Rwenzori range, Albertine Rift, and surrounding peaks. After celebrating the summit, the descent begins to Bujuku Hut for overnight rest.

Descending from Bujuku, the trail passes through heather and moorlands toward Elena Hut, offering a high-altitude setting surrounded by alpine lakes, waterfalls, and glacial streams. This day allows hikers to experience a different alpine ecosystem while enjoying photography, wildlife spotting, and quiet reflection. Overnight is at Elena Hut.

The trek continues descending through bamboo and rainforest zones, passing waterfalls, valleys, and scenic streams. This day offers a mix of alpine and montane forest landscapes, with ample opportunities to spot wildlife. Dinner and overnight are spent at Nyabitaba Hut, celebrating the successful summit and trek progression.

The final descent continues through montane rainforest back to the trailhead. Trekkers enjoy last glimpses of waterfalls, streams, and forest wildlife before reaching Nyakalengija Trailhead, marking the near conclusion of the central circuit expedition. Overnight at a nearby lodge or campsite is optional, depending on logistics.

On the last day, trekkers depart for Kampala, Fort Portal, or onward destinations, completing the 9-day Rwenzori Mountains Central Circuit Trek. This marks the end of a full ecological and alpine journey through Uganda’s Mountains of the Moon.
