8 Days Rwenzori Trekking Central Circuit Trail Route

The trek begins at Nyakalengija Trailhead with registration, safety briefings, and introductions to your licensed guide and support team. The trail climbs gently through montane rainforest, crossing rivers and bridges while surrounded by moss-draped trees. Wildlife sightings may include colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and forest birds. The day ends at Nyabitaba Hut, where trekkers enjoy dinner and their first overnight in the park.

After breakfast, the trail ascends through rainforest and bamboo forests, gradually opening to scenic viewpoints over valleys. Trekkers witness rich biodiversity, including primates and endemic plants, while acclimatizing for higher altitudes. John Matte Hut provides a comfortable stop for dinner and overnight.

The trail climbs further into heather and moorland zones, passing streams, waterfalls, and giant lobelias. The alpine landscape becomes more dramatic, offering panoramic views of surrounding peaks and valleys. Overnight is at Bujuku Hut, located near Bujuku Valley, allowing trekkers to acclimatize before higher altitude sections.

A challenging day of ascent leads through moorlands, rocky ridges, and alpine landscapes toward Kitandara Hut, the high-altitude camp. Trekkers enjoy dramatic views of glaciers and snowfields, while acclimatizing for the summit attempt. Dinner and overnight at Kitandara Hut prepare climbers for the next day’s early push.

An early pre-dawn start takes trekkers on the summit push to Margherita Peak (5,109 m), traversing rocky ridges, scree slopes, and glaciated terrain. Reaching the summit rewards climbers with breathtaking panoramic views of the Rwenzori massif, the Albertine Rift, and surrounding peaks. After celebrating the summit, the descent begins to Bujuku Hut for a well-earned overnight.

Descending from Bujuku, the trail passes through moorlands, lakes, and alpine meadows toward Elena Hut, offering another unique high-altitude setting surrounded by waterfalls and glacial streams. The day provides opportunities for wildlife viewing, photography, and reflection on the Rwenzori landscapes. Overnight is spent at Elena Hut.

The trek continues descending through heather, bamboo, and rainforest zones, passing scenic waterfalls and valleys. This day offers final glimpses of the alpine environment, while allowing hikers to reflect on the incredible biodiversity and landscapes encountered. Dinner and overnight are spent at Nyabitaba Hut, preparing for the final descent.

The final day descends through montane rainforest back to Nyakalengija Trailhead, marking the conclusion of the 8-day Rwenzori Central Circuit Trek. Trekkers are met by porters and support staff, celebrating the completion of a full Rwenzori circuit expedition through the mystical Mountains of the Moon.
