7-Day Machame Route Kilimanjaro Trek / climb and Maasai Village is often called the “Whiskey Route,” is one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic and popular trekking routes, known for diverse landscapes and high summit success rates. This 7-day itinerary is specially designed to combine the thrill of climbing Africa’s highest peak with an immersive cultural experience at a local Maasai village.

The trek passes through lush rainforest, moorlands, alpine desert, and the arctic summit zone before reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). After descending, participants visit a traditional Maasai village, experiencing their culture, dances, and daily lifestyle.

Day 1 :

Arrival in Moshi

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to your hotel in Moshi. Meet your mountain guide for briefing, gear check, and trek orientation.
Overnight: Hotel in Moshi
Meals: Dinner

Day 2 :

Moshi – Machame Gate – Machame Camp

Altitude: 1,800 m – 2,835 m
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours

Drive to Machame Gate for registration. Begin trekking through lush rainforest, crossing streams and enjoying birdlife and scenic waterfalls.
Overnight: Machame Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3 :

Machame Camp – Shira 1 Camp

Altitude: 2,835 m – 3,500 m
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours

Ascend through heath and moorland zones, leaving dense forest behind. Enjoy panoramic views of Kibo and Mawenzi Peaks.
Overnight: Shira 1 Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4 :

Shira 1 Camp – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp

Altitude: 3,500 m – 4,600 m – 3,950 m
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours

Climb to Lava Tower for acclimatization (“Climb High, Sleep Low”), then descend to Barranco Camp at the base of the famous Barranco Wall.
Overnight: Barranco Camp

Day 5 :

Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp

Altitude: 3,950 m – 4,035 m
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

Climb the Barranco Wall, a short but moderately technical section. Continue to Karanga Camp across alpine desert, preparing for the final summit push.

Day 6 :

Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp

Altitude: 4,035 m – 4,673 m – 5,895 m – 3,100 m
Hiking Time: 12–15 hours
Summit Night: Depart Barafu Camp after midnight for Uhuru Peak, reaching Africa’s highest point at sunrise.
Descend to Mweka Camp, passing through alpine desert and moorland zones.
Overnight: Mweka Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 7 :

Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Maasai Village – Moshi

Altitude: 3,100 m – 1,800 m

Hiking Time: 3–4 hours

Complete the descent to Mweka Gate, where you receive your summit certificate.

After lunch, visit a local Maasai village, learning about their traditional lifestyle, dances, and customs.

Transfer back to Moshi for hotel stay or onward departure.
