Day 1 :

Nyakalengija Trailhead to Nyabitaba Hut

The trek begins at Nyakalengija Trailhead with registration, briefings, and meeting your licensed guide and support team. The trail starts in dense montane rainforest, crossing rivers and wooden bridges with opportunities to spot colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and various forest birds. The gentle climb allows for acclimatization as trekkers reach Nyabitaba Hut for dinner and the first overnight stay.

Day 2 :

Nyabitaba Hut to John Matte Hut

After breakfast, the hike continues through the rainforest before entering bamboo and giant heather zones, where vegetation becomes more alpine. Wildlife and birdlife remain abundant, and the trail begins to offer panoramic views of surrounding peaks. The day concludes at John Matte Hut, a well-situated shelter in the forest, perfect for rest and acclimatization.

Day 3 :

John Matte Hut to Bujuku Hut

The trek ascends through heather and moorland, passing small streams, waterfalls, and giant lobelias. The terrain becomes rugged and rocky, providing challenging hiking sections while rewarding trekkers with breathtaking views of highland valleys and peaks. Bujuku Hut, located near Bujuku Valley, serves as the base for higher altitude exploration and overnight rest.

Day 4 :

Bujuku Hut to Kitandara Hut (High Camp)

Today, the trail climbs steeply through alpine moorland and rocky ridges toward Kitandara Hut, the high-altitude camp. Along the way, trekkers witness spectacular glaciers, snowfields, and the dramatic landscapes of the Rwenzori massif. This day is physically demanding and requires careful pacing to prepare for the summit attempt. Dinner and overnight are spent at the high camp to allow acclimatization.

Day 5 :

Summit Day – Kitandara Hut to Margherita Peak and Descend to Bujuku Hut

In the early pre-dawn hours, trekkers make the summit push to Margherita Peak (5,109 m). The climb traverses rocky ridges, scree slopes, and glaciated terrain under the guidance of experienced mountain leaders. Upon reaching the summit, hikers are rewarded with panoramic views of the Rwenzori range, Albertine Rift, and neighboring peaks, a truly unforgettable experience. After the summit, the descent begins, returning to Bujuku Hut for overnight rest.

Day 6 :

Bujuku Hut to Nyakalengija Trailhead and Departure

The final day involves descending through moorlands, bamboo forests, and rainforest back to Nyakalengija Trailhead. Trekkers enjoy final glimpses of waterfalls, valleys, and wildlife along the way. Upon arrival, the trek concludes, celebrating a successful ascent of Margherita Peak and an epic journey through Uganda’s “Mountains of the Moon.”
