After an early breakfast, you will be transferred to the Marangu Gate where you will complete all park formalities. The adventure begins as you hike through the dense rainforest. This is a relatively easy trek, taking about 4 to 5 hours to reach the Mandara Hut, located at 2,700 meters. Along the way, you may catch glimpses of wildlife such as monkeys, and enjoy the lush vegetation. Once at Mandara Hut, you can take a short acclimatization hike to the nearby Maundi Crater, offering great views of the Kenyan interior and Mount Kilimanjaro.

After breakfast, you’ll continue your trek, passing through the heath zone with beautiful vegetation, such as giant lobelias and heathers. The trail is well-defined and relatively gradual, taking about 6-7 hours to reach Horombo Hut at an altitude of 3,700 meters. Along the way, you’ll be treated to spectacular views of the twin peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo, two of Kilimanjaro’s volcanic craters. Upon arrival at Horombo Hut, you’ll have time to rest and acclimatize, preparing for the next phase of your journey.

This is an extra day meant for acclimatization and can be spent day hiking on Mawenzi Ridge. The unique landscape offers motivating views of Kibo and Mawenzi. After spending a few moments exploring the area we head back to Horombo Hut.

On the third day, you’ll trek toward Kibo Hut at 4,700 meters. The route takes you through the Saddle, a barren, rocky plateau between the peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo. This part of the trek is desolate, with little vegetation, and can feel mentally challenging. After 5-6 hours, you will reach Kibo Hut, which is your base camp for the final summit push. You’ll have time to rest, enjoy a warm meal, and prepare for an early night, as you will begin your summit attempt at midnight.

This is the day you have been waiting for: the summit day! You will begin your ascent to Uhuru Peak around midnight. The first part of the climb is steep and strenuous, passing Hans Meyer Cave at 5,220 meters. As dawn approaches, you’ll reach Gillman’s Point at 5,681 meters, where you can enjoy sunrise over the crater. From here, it’s an additional 1-2 hour hike to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters, where you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views from the summit. After celebrating your achievement, you’ll descend back to Kibo Hut, and then continue descending to Horombo Hut for the night.

After a restful night at Horombo Hut, you’ll start your descent back down to the Marangu Gate. The descent will take you through the moorland and rainforest zones, and you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful surroundings one last time. At the gate, you’ll be congratulated for completing your climb and given a summit certificate. You’ll then be transferred back to your hotel in Moshi for a well-deserved celebration and a hot shower.
