5-Day South Ethiopia-Kenya Border Birding &Wildlife Tour

This 5-day birding and wildlife tour explores the biologically rich border region of South Ethiopia and northern Kenya, an area renowned for its unique habitats, endemic bird species, and diverse wildlife. Traveling through savannahs, riverine forests, volcanic landscapes, and semi-arid ecosystems, the tour offers outstanding opportunities for birdwatching and game viewing in one of East Africa’s lesser-visited regions.

The region is home to numerous specialty birds such as Stresemann’s Bushcrow, White-tailed Swallow, Northern Carmine Bee-eater, and various raptors, making it a must-visit destination for avid birders. Alongside exceptional birdlife, participants may encounter mammals including Grevy’s zebra, oryx, giraffe, ostrich, and other plains game adapted to this unique environment.

The journey also provides insight into the cultures of local communities living along the Ethiopia–Kenya border, adding a meaningful cultural dimension to the experience. Guided by experienced local birding and wildlife.

Day 1 :

Addis Ababa – Yabello (Southern Ethiopia)

Depart Addis Ababa early in the morning and drive south toward Yabello, passing through the scenic Ethiopian Rift Valley. En route, stop for birding around lakes, acacia woodlands, and open grasslands. Afternoon birding around Yabello town and nearby habitats, targeting southern Ethiopian specialties.
Key birds: Abyssinian Roller, Eastern Yellow-billed Hornbill, Somali Fiscal, various larks and raptors.
Overnight: Lodge or hotel in Yabello.

Day 2 :

Yabello – Mega (Ethiopia)

Spend the day birding in the famous Yabello–Mega region, one of Ethiopia’s premier birding destinations. Explore scrubland, savannah, and bush habitats in search of endemic and near-endemic species. This area is critical for birders seeking rare species found nowhere else.
Key birds: Stresemann’s Bushcrow, White-tailed Swallow, Pygmy Batis, Ethiopian Boubou.
Wildlife: Plains game such as gerenuk, Grant’s gazelle, and warthog.
Overnight: Lodge or basic hotel in Mega or Yabello.

Day 3 :

Mega – Moyale – Northern Kenya Border Region

After breakfast, drive toward the Ethiopia–Kenya border at Moyale. Cross-border landscapes offer excellent birding in semi-arid ecosystems with dramatic scenery. Afternoon birding around Moyale and surrounding bushland on the Kenyan side.
Key birds: Somali Ostrich, Northern Carmine Bee-eater, Somali Courser, various sunbirds and weavers.
Wildlife: Oryx, Grevy’s zebra (occasionally), and other arid-adapted species.
Overnight: Lodge or hotel in Moyale or nearby northern Kenya town.

Day 4 :

Northern Kenya Border Region Exploration

Full day exploring bird-rich areas in northern Kenya near the Ethiopia border. Focus on dry-country specialists, raptors, and migratory species. Optional cultural visits to local communities to learn about traditional pastoralist lifestyles.
Key birds: Vulturine Guineafowl, Secretary Bird, Kori Bustard, Chestnut-headed Sparrow-Lark.
Overnight: Lodge or camp in northern Kenya.

Day 5 :

Return Journey / Departure

Morning birding around the lodge area for last sightings and photography. After breakfast, begin return journey to Moyale and onward travel arrangements (either returning to Ethiopia or continuing deeper into Kenya, depending on tour design). Tour ends upon arrival at final destination.
