Your journey begins at Nyakalengija Trailhead, where you register, meet your guide and porters, and receive a briefing. The trail gently climbs through montane rainforest, crossing rivers and wooden bridges, with chances to spot colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and tropical birds. Trekkers arrive at Nyabitaba Hut for dinner and an overnight stay, preparing for the higher altitude zones ahead.
After breakfast, the trek ascends through dense rainforest and bamboo zones, offering lush scenery and glimpses of endemic plants. The trail gradually opens up to reveal panoramic valley views as trekkers approach John Matte Hut, where dinner and overnight accommodation allow for rest and acclimatization.
The trail climbs steadily into heather and moorland zones, passing streams, waterfalls, and giant lobelias. The terrain becomes rocky and alpine, with breathtaking vistas of surrounding peaks. Overnight is at Bujuku Hut, located near the beautiful Bujuku Valley, a perfect base for high-altitude acclimatization.
A challenging ascent through alpine moorlands and rocky ridges leads to Kitandara Hut, the high-altitude camp. Trekkers witness glaciers, snowfields, and dramatic alpine scenery. Overnight at Kitandara Hut prepares hikers for the summit attempt.
An early pre-dawn start begins the summit push to Margherita Peak (5,109 m/16,762 ft). Climbers traverse scree slopes, rocky ridges, and glaciated terrain with guidance from expert mountain leaders. At the summit, panoramic views of the Rwenzori range, Albertine Rift, and surrounding peaks reward trekkers. After celebrating, the team descends back to Bujuku Hut for overnight rest.
Descending from Bujuku, trekkers pass through alpine moorlands, high-altitude lakes, waterfalls, and glacial streams, arriving at Elena Hut, which offers a peaceful and scenic overnight stop. Hikers can enjoy photography and observe wildlife in this high-altitude environment.
Trekking along additional alpine ridges and valleys, hikers enjoy the central circuit’s high-altitude scenery and lakes. Overnight at Kitandara Hut allows more acclimatization and rest.
Descending through moorlands, heather zones, and alpine streams, trekkers retrace parts of the trail while enjoying new perspectives of glaciers, waterfalls, and peaks. Overnight at Bujuku Hut.
The descent continues through bamboo and rainforest zones, passing waterfalls and valleys. This day provides final alpine-to-montane transitions and overnight at Nyabitaba Hut.
The trek concludes the descent through montane rainforest back to Nyakalengija Trailhead, marking the near-completion of the full central circuit expedition. Trekkers can celebrate their accomplishment with support staff. Overnight at a nearby lodge or camp is optional.
